ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men’s golf team competed against Gannon in split-squad action during the 2010 Battle of Lake Erie, held Saturday and Sunday at Downing Golf Course. Mercyhurst’s Green and White teams tied for first place in the standings, with White prevailing in a tie-breaker. The Lakers also had three golfers finish in a tie for first place.

Laker sophomore Derek Elliott earned medalist honors with a two-round score of 144, as he won a card-off tiebreaker over teammates Derek Fisher and Matt Mahoney.

Mercyhurst Green shot 594 (298-296) over the tournament, matching Mercyhurst White (299-295), with the White team winning the title by way of a card-off tiebreaker. Gannon Gold placed third at 596 (299-297), followed by Gannon Maroon at 620. Edinboro’s club team scored 632, with Mercyhurst Blue placing sixth with 636.

Nine Mercyhurst golfers improved their scores from the first to the second round, as 11 out of the 12 Lakers entered broke 80. Additionally, seven Lakers either broke or tied their season best for 18 holes.

Elliott and Fisher spurred the Mercyhurst White team to the championship, shooting 144 each for the tournament. Elliott posted a season-best 71 Sunday, while Fisher shot his best round of 2010 with a 73. Colin Farabaugh carded his lowest 18-hole total with a 74, giving him 151 and an eighth-place tie, while Michael Sito shot a 77 for a tournament score of 155.

Mahoney paced Mercyhurst Green with a 144, following up his tournament-low 69 with a 75 Sunday. Tyler Bidwell placed fifth with 147, adding a 77 in the second round. Brian Corbitt fired a season-best 73 Sunday, good for 149 and seventh place. Robbie Trypus carded a collegiate-best round of 71 Sunday, leaving him with 154 for the tournament.

Jake Pilarski (77-76) shot 153 to lead Mercyhurst Blue, while Garrett Kimple registered a 154, including 76 for the second round. Mike Wayner posted his best round of 2009 with a second-round 78, recording 157 for the event. Patrick Jackson (91-81) shot 172 to round out team scoring.

The Lakers have completed their 2009-10 season with their second team title in a row, having won the Shepherd Invitational.

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College men’s golf team, hosting the second annual Battle of Lake Erie at Downing Golf Course, has entered three teams into the tournament. Mercyhurst’s Green team leads the event after Saturday’s first round with 298, paced by Matt Mahoney, who leads the individual standings with a 69 for 18 holes.

The Mercyhurst Green team leads six teams with 298, followed by Mercyhurst White and Gannon Gold at 299. Gannon’s Maroon team is fourth with 308, flowed by Edinboro’s club team (314) and Mercyhurst Blue (325).

A total of 10 Lakers shot below 80 on Saturday, with five players setting or tying season best rounds.

Mahoney paces the field of 28 golfers with a season-best round of 69, leading Mercyhurst Green. Tyler Bidwell, one day after being named to the NCAA Regional field, is tied for second at 70. Brian Corbitt is tied for ninth with 76, and Robbie Trypus caps team scoring at 83.

Derek Fisher shot a season-best 71 Saturday to lead Mercyhurst White with a fourth-place finish. Derek Elliott carded a 73 and is in sixth position. Colin Farabaugh posted his best round at 77 and is in a tie for 11th place. Michael Sito tied for his low round of the season at 78.

Jake Pilarski fired a 77 to pace Mercyhurst Blue, tying for 11th place so far. Garrett Kimple shot 78, and Mike Wayner matched his top season 18-hole score with 79. Patrick Jackson scored 91 to wrap up team scoring. Brian Pogel also competed for Mercyhurst, shooting 88.

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Mercyhurst men’s golf team finished sixth at the Ted Barclay Spring Invitational, hosted by Denison University Sunday, April1 11 at Granville Golf Course.

The par-71 course played at 6,559 yards Sunday. Mercyhurst placed sixth out of seven teams, with a two-day team score of 651. Allegheny won the team title by nine strokes over Baldwin-Wallace, shooting 611 to B-W’s 620. The College of Wooster edged Denison by one stroke, registering 621 for third place. Muskingum took fifth place, while Mercyhurst placed seventh and Kenyon finished seventh.

Matt Mahoney led the Lakers, shooting 158 over the two-day tournament. Mahoney shot a 78 Sunday to tie for 17th place out of 45 golfers. Michael Sito also shot 78 for round two, tying for 29th with a total of 162. Brian Corbitt tied for 34th with 165 (81-84), while Mike Wayner (80-87) rounded out team scoring with 167. Patrick Jackson and Colin Farabaugh also competed for the Lakers.

Nick Bryan of Baldwin-Wallace earned medalist honors, shooting 74 each day for a total of 148.

GAMBIER, Ohio - The Mercyhurst men's golf team competed in split-squad action Sunday, March 28. A group of six golfers competed at the Kenyon Spring Invitational in Gambier, Ohio, taking ninth place, while the rest of the team competed at the Glenville State Invitational.

The Lakers recorded a two-day team score of 685 (333-352) at Kenyon, finishing ninth out of 10 teams entered. Madonna claimed the team title with 614, defeating second-place Walsh by 30 strokes. Daemen and the Univ. of Northwestern Ohio tied for third, and Kenyon placed fifth.

Garrett Kimple led the Lakers, tying for 23rd out of 59 competitors. Kimple shot an 83 Sunday for a two-round score of 164. Robbie Trypus finished in a tie for 43rd place with 172 (85-87), while Brian Corbitt (83-90) tied for 46th with 173. Michael Sito rounded out team scoring with 176, following up an 84 with 92 Sunday. Patrick Jackson carded 186 over the two rounds, and Brian Pogel registered 193.

Nick Sears from Madonna earned medalist honors with 150, shooting 74 Saturday and 76 on Sunday.

One contingent of Mercyhurst golfers place sixth out of nine teams at the Westminster Invitational, held Monday, Oct. 5 at New Castle Country Club. Mercyhurst recorded a team score of 349 strokes at Westminster. Malone won the invitational, followed by Grove City, Westminster and Edinboro in the top four.

Mercyhurst was led at New Castle by Matt Mahoney and Garrett Kimple, who each shot an 85. Michael Sito registered 88 shots, while Mike Wayner carded a 91. Also competing for the Lakers at Westminster were: Colin Farabaugh and Brian Corbitt.

Malone’s Michael Strayer won the medalist award with a round of 73, one over par.

Lakers Claim Second Place in Kenyon Invitational

Gambier, Ohio – The Mercyhurst men’s golf team posted a second-round total of 330 strokes Sunday, giving them a score of 662 for the two-day Kenyon College Invitational. The Lakers took second place, and were edged by two strokes by the College of Wooster for the team championship. 

After Wooster and Mercyhurst, Walsh, Wilmington and Kenyon rounded out the top five. The University of Northwestern Ohio, Notre Dame College and Hiram finished out the field in that order.

Tyler Bidwell and Matt Mahoney tied for fifth place in the tournament’s 61-competitor field, each shooting 163 over two days. Bidwell fired an 80 Sunday after a first-round 83, while Mahoney shot 81 for the first round and an 82 in the second. Derek Fisher and Patrick Jackson finished out the team scoring for Mercyhurst, tying for 18th place with identical 168 scores. Fisher registered 85 strokes in Saturday’s first round and shot an 83 Sunday, while Jackson did just the opposite. #Ben# Deets shot a 94 Sunday for a two-round total of 181 strokes, tying him for 44th place. 

Michael Sito shot an 83, matching his first-round total, and he finished in a tie for 14th place. Garrett Kimple shot a 93, giving him 173 strokes for the tournament. Colin Farabaugh recorded 89 strokes for a two-day total of 181. Michael Wayner shot a 98, giving him 197 strokes for the tournament. 

Kyle Martin from Ohio Wesleyan won medalist honors by eight strokes, shooting a 77 Sunday for a two-day total of 150 strokes. 

Mercyhurst will next compete in the Ted Barclay Spring Invitational, hosted by Denison University Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4.

Men's Golf in Third Place After First Day at Kenyon Invitational
Gambier, Ohio – The Mercyhurst men’s golf team began its spring season at the Kenyon College Invitational Saturday in Gambier, Ohio. The Laker are currently tied for third place after the first round. 

The Lakers top four golfers have recorded a total of 332 strokes, and are tied with the University of Northwestern Ohio for third place. The College of Wooster leads with 317 strokes, while Wilmington is 11 strokes behind the Fighting Scots in second place. 

Mercyhurst’s varsity team was led by Matt Mahoney, who shot an 81, registering 40 strokes on the front nine and 41 on the back nine. Mahoney is tied for 10th place after the first round. Tyler Bidwell and Patrick Jackson are tied for 18th place, as each posted 83 strokes, while Derek Fisher shot an 85 and is tied for 30th place. Ben Deets fired an 87 and is tied for 36th place. 

The Lakers’ individual competitors posted strong performances, as Garrett Kimple is tied for seventh place overall after shooting an 80 on the first day. Michael Sito’s score of 83 has him tied for 18th place. Colin Farabaugh shot a 92, while Michael Wayner registered 99 strokes. 

Kyle Martin from Ohio Wesleyan leads the field with a one-over-par 73. Greg Benckart of Wooster and Walsh University’s Sam Troyer are tied for second with 77 strokes. 

Day two of the invitational is scheduled for a 10 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday, March 29.

Prep roundup: Elyria’s Treuel earns MVP honors

RAVENNA — Senior Alex Treuel shot 73 for medalist honors to lead Elyria to a third-place finish in the Valley Division portion of the Northeast Ohio Conference tournament at Windmill Lakes Golf Club on Monday.
The Pioneers totaled 320 strokes, while Strongsville was the Valley Division team champion with 309 strokes.
Treuel also was named Valley Division Player of the Year and was joined on the division’s
all-league team by teammate Tory Stewart.
