Niagara finishes FALL BALL Undefeated!

Alexis Wayne Gives Niagara An Unbeaten Fall Season

Alexis Wayne's sixth inning RBI double gave Niagara a 1-0 win over Buffalo and a perfect 5-0 fall record.

Pitching was dominant on a sunny Sunday afternoon at UB's Nan Harvey Field as both teams combined for only seven hits. Julie DiMatteo pitched the first three innings for the Purple Eagles, giving up only a single; she was relieved by Ali Grab who in two innings of work gave up only a double to Kristin Waldron. Second baseman Teresa Healy snuffed a UB threat with a great diving play.

Niagara's offense didn't get much early against UB's Holly Johnson, with Kayla Hines' single and Jen Hare's double being the only threats they could muster until the sixth inning. In that inning, Maggie McDonald, who had singled, made it all the way home when Wayne crushed a line drive to the centerfield fence.

Freshman Kim Bryson pitched the last two innings for the Purple Eagles and had three strikeouts, one of which ended a sixth inning threat that had Bulls on second and third base after another Kristin Waldron double. In the bottom of the seventh inning, fellow freshman Brittany Richberg made a great catch at the left field fence to help preserve the victory.

Niagara ends their fall season with a perfect record of 5-0. Buffalo dropped to 1-4. There was supposed to be a tripleheader today, but Canisius College had to drop out due to injuries to their pitching staff.

Softball Slugs Its Way To Split At Youngstown State

4/28/2010

Kristin Sito

CANFIELD, OHIO - Niagara concluded its mid-week Ohio trip with a split against the Youngstown State Penguins on Wednesday afternoon at McCune Park. The Purple Eagles scored 22 runs in two games; losing 15-10 in game one and winning 12-2 in game two to earn the split.

Niagara 10, Youngstown State 15

Niagara scored one run in the first inning to start the high scoring affair. YSU responded in its half of the inning by scoring eight runs, including a grand slam. The Purple Eagles, however, worked themselves back into the game and eventually took the lead by the fifth inning.

Niagara scored two runs in the second inning on a Kristin Sito RBI single to centerfield. In the third inning, Alexis Wayne and Sito each drove home two runs in a four-run inning by Niagara to cut the lead to 8-7. The Purple Eagles continued the comeback in the fifth inning. Senior Kristin Kill's RBI single scored Garbrielle Lustrinelli from second base to tie the game at 8-8. The next batter, Sito, followed with a two-run homer to left field to give Niagara a 10-8 lead.

However, the lead was short-lived. The Penguins scored four runs in the fifth inning, three runs in the sixth inning and held NU scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to win the game, 15-10. YSU hit six home runs in the game, with three coming from Haley Thomas.

Sito went 4-for-4 and set a school single game record with six RBIs.

Niagara 12, Youngstown State 2

Niagara's bats stayed hot in game two and it got off to a blistering start in the first inning. The Purple Eagles put the first five batters on base and score three runs. Kayla Hines and Baker each had hits to score one run, while Niagara also benefited from three Penguins errors to score more four runs in a nine run first inning.

The Purple Eagles took a 9-2 lead into the fifth and added more runs in the inning. Hines doubled to left field to score Jaclyn Russell, and Sito singled to centerfield to drive home two more runs.

Four Purple Eagles finished with multiple hits and RBIs; Baker went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Hines went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Healy and Sito both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Julie DiMatteo cruised to her fifth-straight win; DiMatteo struck out five in the five-inning complete game.

Niagara returns to Monteagle Ridge for conference series against Iona and Fairfield this weekend.

DiMatteo No-Hits Rider In Doubleheader Sweep

4/24/2010

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Sophomore pitcher Julie DiMatteo tossed a no-hitter en route to picking up two wins as Niagara swept Rider, 8-0 and 12-0, in a MAAC doubleheader on Saturday at Niagara Field.

"We did a great job attacking the ball and made some great defensive plays against a very good Rider team," head coach Al Dirschberger said.

Rider 0, Niagara 8

Niagara (14-14, 6-2 MAAC) cruised to the sweep beginning with a no-hitter by DiMatteo in game one. The Purple Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBIs from Teresa Healy and Jen Hare. Niagara added four more runs in the second on a two RBI single by Healy, and RBIs from Jenna Baker and Hare.

Niagara took a 7-0 lead into the fifth inning with DiMatteo continuing to mow down Broncs batters. DiMatteo retired Rider (11-26-1, 4-4 MAAC) in order to end the fifth; it would be the last time Rider would bat.

The Purple Eagles, needing one more run to end the game,  had two runners on base with two outs when Healy was intentionally walk to load the bases. Baker stepped up and hit  a single up the middle to score Kristin Kill from third to have the game called at 8-0.

DiMatteo earned her first-ever no-hitter as a Purple Eagle. She finished with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings to win her eighth game of the season.

Rider 0, Niagara 12

Healy and Kristin Sito combined for seven RBIs in game two as the Purple Eagles made quick work of the Broncs to wrap up the doubleheader sweep. Niagara jumped out in front again in the first inning. Three of the first four batters were hit by pitch to load the bases. Sito singled home the first of three runs in the inning; Hare followed with a walk and Becky Zill single to right center.

The Purple Eagles increased their lead in the second inning with a two-run homer by Healy, her sixth of the season. Niagara put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning as it batted around the order. Sito drove home two runs to get the scoring started. Zill, Kayla Hines and Kill all followed with RBIs.  The final runs came from the bat of Healy, who scored two runs with a single to right field, for her seventh RBI of the day.

Senior pitcher Cassie Stone, with the help of a great defensive play by Gabrielle Lustrinelli, shut down the Broncs in the fifth to end the game. Stone went 2.0 innings, struck out two and allowed one hit after she replaced DiMatteo who went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts.

Niagara combined for 20 runs and 23 hits while holding Rider to zero runs and three hits.

The Purple Eagles will make a mid-week out of conference trip to Ohio to face Akron on Tuesday and Youngstown State on Wednesday.

Softball Splits Series At Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Niagara split two games against the Binghamton Bearcats on Wednesday afternoon for its third consecutive series split. The Purple Eagles dropped the Bearcats, 9-2, in game one, but had their five-game winning streak against Binghamton come to an end with an 8-0 defeat in game two.

"We did a very nice in the first game after being off for 10 days," head coach Al Dirschberger said.  "We just made too many mistakes in the second game."

Niagara 9, Binghamton 2
Niagara (8-12) was efficient at the plate and in the field in game one; the Purple Eagles got nine runs off of 11 hits and committed zero errors. Kristin Kill put NU on the board with a RBI single in the second inning. In the third inning, the Purple Eagles put their first two runners on base in which Maggie McDonald stole home. Kristin  Sito later followed with a RBI double and  two batters later, Jen Hare blasted her third home run of the season to give NU a 5-0 lead.

NU took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth when Binghamton (16-12) entered the scorebook with two runs. Niagara responded in the next inning with a three-run homer by Sito en route to a 9-2 final. Julie DiMatteo recorded her fifth win of the season with a complete-game effort. DiMatteo struck out four and allowed six hits.

Niagara 0, Binghamton 8
Binghamton scored three runs in the second and third innings, while NU's bats went silent, en route to an 8-0 win. The defeat snapped Niagara's five-game winning streak against its in-state rival dating back to the 2008 season. The Purple Eagles mustered five hits in the game, with two of them coming from McDonald.

Niagara returns to conference action this weekend when it travels to Jersey City for a doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Saturday.

Softball Splits With Canisius; Clinches Canal Cup

4/3/2010

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara softball team earned a split against archrival Canisius in its home opening doubleheader on Saturday from Niagara Field. Niagara (7-11, 1-1 MAAC) defeated Canisius (13-13, 1-1 MAAC) in a pitchers’ duel, 1-0, in game one, but fell 6-3 in game two.

“We found what we have been searching for with staying consistent,” head coach Al Dirschberger said. “The pitchers threw very well, the defense was consistent and the hitting was aggressive. We played well against the defending MAAC champion.”

Niagara’s victory in game one of the doubleheader clinched the Battle of the Bridge series between the two schools and brought the Canal Cup back to Monteagle Ridge for the first time since the inaugural season in 2006-07.

The conference opener for both teams was also the inaugural “Pitch for Pink” series between Niagara and Canisius. The “Pitch for Pink” series is an effort to bring awareness to breast cancer.  Both programs will accept donations at each game with proceeds from today’s game going to Mount St. Mary Breast Care Center; online donations can be made here.  Niagara wore pink shirts and Canisius don white shirts with pink lettering for the special occasion.

Canisius 0, Niagara 1
Julie DiMatteo’s pitching gem paced Niagara to its first home win over Canisius since 2004. DiMatteo had a complete game three-hitter while striking out eight Golden Griffins en route to her third win of the season.

It was a defensive battle through the five innings; both teams combined for three hits.

The Purple Eagles broke through in the sixth inning. Junior Maggie McDonald led off the inning with a single to centerfield and advanced to second on a throwing error by the centerfielder. Junior Teresa Healy followed with the game-winning RBI single to centerfield to score McDonald. Niagara failed to add any more runs despite having the bases loaded on consecutive occasions before ending the inning.

Canisius got the leadoff batter to start the seventh, but DiMatteo retired the next three batters in order to end the game.

Canisius 6, Niagara 3
Canisius took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off of junior Kayla Hines. Senior Jenna Baker led off NU’s half of the inning with double to left field and was later drove home by sophomore Jen Hare.

In the fourth inning, the Purple Eagles tied the game at 2-2 with a lead off blast over the centerfield wall by junior Kristin Sito.

Pitcher senior Cassie Stone, who entered the game in the third, was coasting along until her attempt to pick off Canisius’ Lizzy Gatto at third sailed into the outfield which scored Gatto to give the Golden Griffins a 3-2 lead.

In the seventh inning, another costly error by Niagara opened the door for Canisius. Lauren Hope reached first base on an error by Hare to start the inning. Three batters later, Katie Lancellotti hit a two out double to give Canisius a 5-2 lead. The next batter, Gatto, singled to score Canisius’ sixth run.

McDonald’s RBI double sparked Niagara’s last inning rally, but Baker struck out with runners on the corner to end the game.

Niagara is back at home on Wednesday for a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure starting at 3 p.m.

Softball Splits Opening Games In UMBC Classic

3/19/2010
BALTIMORE - The Niagara softball team split two games in the UMBC Spring Classic on Friday. The Purple Eagles won their first game, 9-2, over the Saint Joseph's Hawks before dropping an extra inning battle against the host, UMBC Retrievers, 6-5.

"We did a really nice job in the first game attacking the ball and on defense, especially with the 10-day layoff," head coach Al Dirschberger said. "In the second game we made too many mental and physical mistakes. We will continue to work hard to fix our weaknesses."

Saint Joseph's 2, Niagara 9
Niagara (4-6) used a five-run sixth inning to break open a close game in the opener of the UMBC Spring Classic. Kayla Hines' two RBI double and Jen Hare's RBI single gave the Purple Eagles a 3-2 lead after two innings. Kristin Sito led off the third inning with a home run to left field to increase NU's lead to 4-2.

Sito added her second RBI in the game with a sinlge in the fifth inning that started NU's five-run inning. Next batter, Teresa Healy, launched a two-run homer to centerfield. Maggie McDonald stole home and Jen Baker scored on an fielding error to conclude the scoring.

Cassie Stone had a complete game, striking out six while allowing three hits and one unearned run, to  improve her record to 3-2.

Elyria cousin’s Kristin Sito, a Junior at Niagara and Tess Sito, a Freshman at Cleveland State, battled it out in the Spartan Classic at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Friday. With Niagara leading 1 to nothing, Tess tied the game with a solo Home Run over the right center field fence leading off the top of the fourth. CSU scored a second run in the inning to take a 2 to 1 lead. Leading off the bottom of the fifth, Kristin Sito blasted a shot off the right center field fence and eventually scored to even the score at 2. It took 8 innings to finish this classic with Cleveland State coming out on top 5-3. Cleveland State defeated Sacred Heart 1-0 earlier in the day while Niagara went on to defeat the Host Team UNCG 3-2. For the day, Tess had 2 hits, a double and a home run, scored 2 runs and one RBI. Kristin finished with 3 hits including a double, scored a run and one RBI. We are hoping (and chances are good) for a rematch on Saturday or Sunday. WHAT A RIDE!!!
